The South-to-North Water Diversion Project and the Sustainable Development of China

Abstract: Regional economic development is largely attributed to the flow and allocation of resources and production factors in the region. A number of major across-regional projects have engaged in the complementary flow and optimized allocation of resources and production factors. Water has various uses and is the basic condition for national economic and social development. Rationally utilizing and optimizing the allocation of water resources is the inevitable requirement of China's modernization. The North China Plain consisting of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Henan is vital to China, but the increasing scarcity of water resources and the deterioration of the ecological environment has become a bottleneck restricting the sustainable development of the region. The middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has been put into operation, which greatly eases the serious shortage of water resources in the North China Plain and has great significance in optimizing regional development environment, increasing the quality of life of the people, accelerating the new-type urbanization, improving agricultural production conditions, and achieving a sound ecological environment and sustainable economic development.
